Angioplasty – Balloons Course

Learn everything about compliant, non-compliant, and semi-compliant balloons

What you'll learn in this course

This course will explore balloons in much more detail. Coronary angioplasty balloons are used to crush the plaque (that makes up the stenosis being treated) to the inner wall of the coronary artery. The aim of which is restore blood flow within the diseased artery prior to placement of a stent.

They are initially passed over a guide wire (that was already placed through the stenosis) and pushed down to the stenosis site ready for inflation. Contrast dye is used to expand the balloon, not air, so that it can be visualised under x-rays and eliminate the risk of air embolus should the balloon pop.

This course will teach you the role and construction of a balloon, the different types and when they should be used, preparation, and much more.
